On the Proximity of Generative Art and Music
äk-ˈtet. : a piece of music written for eight voices or eight instruments
Octet is an installation by Marcel Schwittlick that features 8 vintage HP plotters.
During the installation's opening hours, Marcel created 60 drawings using the plotter machines while controlling them live via high-definition midi controllers and real-time generative software input.
Generative art and music have always enjoyed a close artistic proximity. As some may refer to generative and algorithmic artists as "conductors", theorists often compare generative algorithms to musical scores, evoking the notion of the "allographic" arts and unique individual performances based on a single script.
Here, Marcel Schwittlick further blurs the lines between the different artistic branches and media. He performs live, generating outputs in real-time. In what can be described as a symphony of plotters, he simultaneously and independently supplements the permanent visual artwork with an ephemeral auditory component.
